How many LED shop lights do I need? ›

As such, we would likely recommend a total of five LED Shop Light Fixtures for your installation. Based on my rough calculations, we would recommend 1 fixture for the 10' wall, 3 fixtures for the 32' wall, and 2 fixtures for the 16' wall.

Multiply your room square footage by the footcandle requirement. For example, a 100-square foot living room, which needs 20 foot candles, will need 2,000 lumens. A 100-square foot dining room, which needs 40 foot-candles, will need 4,000 lumens.

It depends on the wattage of the LED and driver combined as well as the voltage supplied. To provide an example, this is a link to a 54 watt 4′ linear LED fixture. At 54 watts with a power supply of 120 volts the linear fixture would use 0.45 amps. The 75 watt version with the same voltage would use 0.625 amps.

Quality LED lights use metal heat sinks with fins to pull away and store the heat the light produces. Cheaply made LEDs may use fans or plastic heat sinks to try and pull heat away. These methods of managing heat are more likely to fail, lowering your light's life expectancy.

LED lights provide some major benefits, however, there are some drawbacks. First, they're not always dimmer compatible. This is due to an incompatibility between the light bulb, fixture, and dimmer switch. Be sure to research for an LED bulb that's dimmer compatible, and rated as having low flicker.

In general, you'll need around 300 lumens per square foot for a garage workshop area that requires task lighting. For ambient or accent lighting, aim for 50 to 75 lumens per square foot.

In a shop that is open every day except Sunday and where the lights are on for 9 hours each day, LED lights will last approximately 8 years and 10 months. Offices are open for an average of 250 days a year. If we assume that the lights stay on for 10 hours each day, here the LED lights will last for 10 years.

Once you know how many lumens your fixture has, you can calculate the number of fixtures you'll need for your space. The recommendations I found start at 70 LM per square foot for a mechanic's or woodshop and range anywhere up to 100 LM per square foot (assuming an 8 foot ceiling or fixture height).

A general rule is to space them out at the same distance as the height of the ceiling. For example, if your ceiling is 10 feet high, space them out every 10 feet. If your ceiling is 15 feet high, space them out every 15 feet.

As a general rule of thumb, it's recommended to have at least 20 lumens per square foot of garage space. For a typical 2 car garage, which is around 400-500 square feet, you would need a total of 8000-10,000 lumens. For a 3 car garage, which is around 600-700 square feet, you would need a total of 12,000-14,000 lumens.

Watts = volts times amps; so assuming we're talking about a North American standard 110–120 VAC circuit, you might as well (in the interest of being conservative) consider a 100W bulbs as taking 1A at this voltage. So a 15A circuit should be able to handle 15 such bulbs.
