“But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.” In other words, He says, “I want you to obey Me.” This business of coming into the temple, it’s great. It’s wonderful. But when your lives contradict it. And someone has said that some people go to church to eye the clothes and others to close their eyes, not really to worship God. Their lives have not been changed. It’s not the testimony you give in church; it’s the testimony you give out yonder in the world that counts, friends. Oh my, this is personal, is it not?

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Now, no individual Israelite ever called God “Father.” He was a father to the nation, and He called Israel “My Son,” but He never called David His son. He says, “David my servant.” He never called Moses His son. He called him, “Moses my servant.” It’s only in this day of grace. How wonderful it is. How privileged we are today. “To as many as received him”—that is, the Lord Jesus—“to them (those that received Christ) the right (the “exousia” power) to become the sons of God” to those that don’t do any more nor less than just simply trust in His name. Oh, is He your Savior today from sin? If He is, you’re not only a saved sinner, you’re a son of God.

Saved from what?

My friend, today you say you’re a Christian. What do you mean by that? “Oh, I’ve trusted Christ.” Trusted Him for what? “I trusted Him as my Savior. He’s done so much for me.” Fine, I’m glad to hear that. But did He save you from sin? Remember He died on the cross to save you from sin; not to give you a new personality or make you a millionaire. He died to save you from sin. “He was delivered for our offenses.” And we were very offensive to God, by the way. Are you saved, friend? That’s important today.

Only faith brings salvation

This idea today that you are in and of yourself able to please God, my friend, is absolutely contradicted in the Word of God. It’s impossible to please Him; you can’t meet His standard. Therefore, good works cannot produce salvation, but salvation can produce good works. And Paul makes it very clear how we’re saved in Ephesians 2:8-10. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

He came to save sinners

This is a faithful saying, and it’s worthy of all acceptance, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” And that is a very important verse of Scripture. That He came into the world to save sinners. He didn’t come in as the greatest teacher; He was that. He didn’t come in to set an example; He did that. But He came into the world to save sinners. And when you give a testimony, make sure you tell the folk not how wonderful you are today and of all of your accomplishments. You tell them that you were a sinner and that Christ saved you. That’s the important thing.

Be in prayer

“Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.” What he’s saying here is this. The Word enables the believer to walk before the wicked world. The Word establishes a believer in his walk. And now he says, “Finally, brethren, pray for us….” Prayer is something that all believers should do. And every work, if it is to succeed, is to have prayer back of it.

Doing the work

The believer needs to be established in His work down here. You see, today, it’s rather deceitful, and you deceive yourself and others when you talk about how much you love the coming of the Lord and you don’t study His Word. And it doesn’t manifest itself in your life, and it doesn’t make you work. You see, if you really believe Christ is coming, you’re really going to be busy. You’re going to work for Him, because you’re going to give an account to Him. And if He’s going to be here tomorrow, I want to be busy today. And you won’t have your nose pressed against the window looking for Him to come or always looking up into heaven. You’re going to be looking around you, doing the work of the Lord down here. That’s the greatest proof that you believe in His coming.

Established in faith

“Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and establish you in every good word and work.” Now, He’s to “comfort your hearts.” The Word of God will comfort you, and it will edify you. That is the important thing. And “establish you” means you’ll get rooted and grounded in the Word of God. You won’t be carried away by every wind of doctrine. You won’t be going out after every fad today. We need be established in the faith.

Supernatural peace

God is offering you—a lost, hell-doomed sinner—a salvation if you trust Him, and that’s grace. And if you’ve experienced that, then you know something of the peace of God—what it is to put your head on the pillow at night and rejoice in a salvation like this. And this word “peace” is the softest pillow that there is to sleep on at night. It’s the peace that comes when you know your sins are forgiven you. And this comes not because of some psychological gyration that you go through down here. It comes from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and it’s supernatural, my friend.

The two sides of God

God is tenderhearted, like the Lord Jesus. And how tenderhearted He was, not willing that any should perish. But listen to Him speaking to these cities that rejected Him: “Woe unto you, Capernaum … you’ll be cast down to hell!” Say, that’s strong language coming from the gentle Jesus. We get just a warped view of Him when we run around, saying, “God is love! God is love!” That’s true. But God is holy, God is righteous, and God will judge. You’re not rushing into heaven, my friend, on the little love boat today. You’re only going to come there because Christ shed His blood, gave His life, that you might have eternal life and be covered with the righteousness of Christ, standing complete and acceptable in Him.

What does the Holy Spirit do for you?

As you trusted Christ, the Holy Spirit did several wonderful things for you. He made you a child of God. Now you want to live for God. He also indwells you. “If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he’s none of His.” So, if you don’t have the Holy Spirit, then you’re not a Christian yet. You become a Christian by trusting Christ, and then you’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit. You don’t have to ask Him in, because He’s there to take the things of Christ and show them unto you. Then, you’re baptized by the Holy Spirit. That means that you have now been put in the body of believers, the church, and you’re in Christ.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
